Which linux version?

I'm a newbie when it comes to Linux. I've been hearing a lot of good things about Linux as how it's more secure and whatnot. I was just wondering, which flavor of Linux should I go with that is the most user friendly and easy to learn?

Secure? Its one of the most exploited webserver OS around ( since everyone uses it )
Its like Windows for the Desktop, since its more widely uses.

I would recommend RH9 or FC ( Redhat or Fedora Core)
Others like Mandrake or CentOS are good too Its more of a personal thing really.

I am learning on Mandrake. From research I did many recommend it fro those coming over from windows. The gui does make it more easier to get around for a newbie.

Has anyone heard of Ubuntu linux? I heard it was an extremely user friendly debian based linux. Apparently they also have a great community support forum. There is also a gnome based version of Ubunutu called Kubuntu.

Ubuntu is one of the easiest. After you get a feel for it, move to Gentoo. It rocks!

For you newbies out there I recommend OpenSuse. OpenSuse is about like installing XP now. OpenSuse has everything you need. You can get legit torrents or http download of the CDs or DVDs at:

I have heard many good things about Ubuntu also from newbies. It's roots are in debian.

for newbies the easiest thing is to try ubuntu, it is a livecd, that means that it runs from the cd without installing it, and with the live cd you have the whole ubuntu system ready to use, but that's not all, if you get comfortable with ubuntu you can install it from the same live cd and in a graphic enviroment, now with ubuntu, linux can't be easiest!

I've always been a fan of Redhat, Fedora, and Centos. Fedora is a spin-off of Redhat, and Centos is a spin off of Redhat Enterprise Linux.

They all share a lot of the same commands / utilities / config files.

If you've never even used linux before, download knoppix. You burn it to a disc, and boot right off the CD. This gives you a fully (almost) functional linux install. Well, it's not an install. Since it's running off the cd, Windows on your hard drive is left untouched. When your tired of it and want to go back, reboot and take the cd out.
