Default Distro flavors

Is there a difference between them? For example, does one distro favor a particular way of doing things (user simplicity or hosting) or are they all the same with different names???

I am thinking about loading linux on my old computer. From what I have read so far Mandrake is best for a newbie because of the 'gui' interface it's like windows. I think Redhat or FreeBSD would be best for hosting.

the distros all use the linux kernel, but all use different package repositories and therefore have different software available for immediate install. I use ubuntu/debian, which I find highly commendable.

Mrasla: I use Xubuntu, which is specifically for older pcs, on an old laptop and it works fantastically on 128 MB ram 800 Mhz

Regards,

Peter

They have a different way of doing things. Depends on what you want and the power of your rig. There are heavy distros like those based on KDE and Gnome. They are usually a beaut, with extensive graphics. There are also light distros like XFCE, for less powerful and older computers, but they still look and function good.

Me, I prefer light weight distros, even for P4s, since I don't need eye-candy.
