I'm not a fan of the zune, i love my ipod too much

After less than a year on store shelves, Microsoft is on target to sell 1 million Zunes by the end of June, according Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices division. Note that's not 1 million sold already, as has been widely reported. The original story, which appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, has been corrected, but not after being widely quoted in coverage elsewhere. The Zune Insider broke the story on the mistake, which is an important clarification but not a huge deal. After all, if they're on track to sell 1 million within 30 days, they've got to be close, right? In the Chronicle interview, Bach says he's happy with the way the Zune is going but not ecstatic:

We're very pleased with the progress. When we finish our fiscal year in June we'll have sold a little over a million Zunes. In the category we're in, the hard-disk-based category, we've got about 10 percent market share. It's a good start. It's not an overwhelming start. I'm not going to pretend it's some gigantic move.

Over the same time period, Apple reportedly shipped 25 million iPods. That sounds like crushing market share superiority, but remember Apple has a huge head start in the market, and other companies are having an equally tough time cracking that nut. Bach puts the best spin possible on the Zune market share by limiting it to hard-disk players, which is fair. But let's face it, most casual music listeners don't care (or even know) if their player has a disk or not. When you consider all players, Zune is in fourth with 2.3 percent share of the market. Those aren't iPod-killer numbers, but they're nothing to be embarrassed about.
