MIT technology expert in coma after Hanoi traffic accident
HANOI, Vietnam: Seymour Papert, an MIT professor emeritus and internationally known expert in technology and learning, was severely injured in a traffic accident and remains in a coma, doctors and colleagues said Thursday.
Papert, 78, was among more than 100 international experts from 30 countries who had gathered in Hanoi this week for conference on teaching mathematics with digital technology. He was struck by a motorbike while crossing a busy Hanoi street Tuesday, said Hoang Xuan Lan, an administrator at Hanoi Technology University, which is hosting the conference.
Vo Van Ban, deputy director of the French Hospital in Hanoi, said that Papert underwent brain surgery on Wednesday morning and remains in a coma.
Papert is an adviser to the "One Laptop Per Child" project, an effort by the MIT Media Lab to provide low-cost computers to children in the developing world. Their work was the subject of a New York Times story last week.
Papert arrived in Hanoi last Saturday. The accident occurred Tuesday afternoon when he was crossing Dao Duy Anh street, a busy street near his hotel.
