I started to get into HTML a couple of years ago, at least five or six years. My first few months were very, very slow. I used Homestead and Geocities, while looking at Webmonkey and HTMLGoodies for advice. Now there are way better guides than those. I still remember my excessive use of animated gifs on a fansite.

IMHO there are so many younger students out there that want to learn Photoshop, but just don't have the money to get the software. I myself was only able to afford a copy once I got to college and they discount it like mad for college students. I truly believe that there should be some sort of system like this for kids in High School. Photoshop is in essence the de facto standard in image manipulation and I believe it would be a great help for their business to essentially "hook" kids by giving them greatly discounted copies in high school. This way once they entered the workforce everyone would know photoshop and it would be further ingrained as the industry standard. I realize that this system has the potential for abuse by parents buying student copies, or other relatives, but so does the discounted college copy. Just my two cents on something the frustrated me during high school. There should be no point where a student has to make a decision between a powerbook...and a program to run on it... Anyone else have a take on this?

Well, I was around 19 or 20...that was 10 years ago, sheesh! Anyways, I never thought I'd do it as a job, but did want to have a zine or something, which I sort of did with my site Poetry Deep (which has been terribly neglected since the birth of the two boys).

Ah...but there is. There is a freeware program called The Gimp which is a LOT like photoshop. I mean, it doesn't have everything photoshop does but it has A LOT--and when you consider that its FREE, and photoshop costs, what $600 or something?--well, I really think it would be a great program to teach in high schools. I started with Photoshop (available at my college) and found the GIMP very similar. I've used the Gimp for years now and had a chance to work on Photoshop again recently, and though photoshop can do a lot of things better, its still very comparable. If someone learned the Gimp it would prepare them well for using Photoshop later. And the GIMP can work on windows or macs or linux.
