allmost all the software i use its freesoftware and the most of the time its also free... but there are two programs i use for digital circuits design, multisim and proteus, those are the very best
I use Gimp because is Open source, and for the simple web site that I do , Gimp work good.
If I will decide to do more sofisticated images I think that I will buy Fireworks.
GIMP is a good freeware programming tool.
While Fireworks MX is good for starters because of the simplicity.
I heard that version 8 has got more features but the learning curve is quite steep...
I used to use GIMP a lot but more and more I'm getting anoyed by it. It's slow and rather un-intuitive though perhaps not for photoshop people. I use PXN8.com now a bit as well as some other miscelaneous free ware and opensource stuff...there was one great vector program I used to create some logos but I can't remember the name...PSN8.com is pretty useful though for basic stuff

Re: Your Favourite Program?
I like adobe photoshop, adobe illustrator, are my two favorite programs. I hear that pain shop pro is pretty cool as well. I haven't had a chance to try that as of yet.
