Default I know HTML. What to study next?

I need help here please. I already know how to make websites using html. I also use CMS like Xoops and Joomla. I want to learn more so that I can make more professional looking sites. Should I learn CSS first? Or PHP or MYSQL?

In my opinion I think you should learn CSS, its the most important thing in web design, and it is growing as a design technique for websites.

You need to learn CSS.

I've taken the time to learn it this year, and it is worth it.

It really simplifies your site code, and allows you so much more freedom. Whether used with straight HTML or a back-end language like PHP, it's becoma an absolute necessity, in my opinion.

When you are writing heavily generated site code, it saves you tons of time and effort, and it makes it so much easier to sort through your code when you have problems.

And besides the design time issues, it's great for maintenance. Want to change your site? No problem. No worries about sorting hundreds of pages of HTML for styling information, and no having to completely retest and debug any of your generated code.

CSS ROCKS!

the question is how well do you really know HTML?
what about CSS?? not a thing to ignore......

and of course, for special client side programming for your website you can learn JavaScript.

I think that after you are familiar with all the client side programming you should start learning a server side language (asp, asp.net, php...)

After HTML you try the following:
CSS
Javascript

The above three takes care of client side coding

After this you need to choose server side scripting. This will depend on yoru resources.

ASP
ASP.net more advanced
PHP
ColdFusion
Java

This goes on and on
If you want to interact with the database you will need
SQL Server
MySQL
Oracle
SqlAnywhere 10
Java based databases
again tehre are many, many

Go back and work with CSS and Javascript. try to pick up XML on the way.

Now when you know HTML you should start learning CSS. For CSS basics you need just a couple of days and after that next step should be PHP.

If your aim is to make your sites more "professional looking" sites then I'd definetly go with CSS as its all about controlling the look of your page.
