Can someone tell me how to make expandng divs? I cannot fugure it out for the life of me. If someone knows can they please fill me in?

Expanding divs going across or going down? I thought the div's automatically expand by itself. It only stops expanding when you set height or width or a certain length.

Expanding down. Mine automaticaly expand but when they do they mess up my layout.
I figured out how to fix it though.
