Default What does http-equiv mean?

Hello everyone,

I am validating my HTML pages at http://validator.w3.org/

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type".......

I was just wondering what does is exaclty do, I assume it tells the browser something. Any ideas?

Okay I was just wondering if it was needed or not. I would think these setting would be set at server side not client side. I have had many pages without it. But when I used this validator it complained it was not present. thanks for link..
