open windows exlporer from html

hi, is it possible to open a windows explorer window through an html link, preferably without javascript but not a problem if thats the only solution?

i've tried file///:foldername etc...

this works if i copy and paste the link into the browser address bar but not if i click ona link which calls it.

Any ideas would be appreciated

I suppose you'd have to use Active X. But it is rather impossible.
