Help Plz: Fixed-width CSS Dropdown menu

Please, be gentle. I'm very new at html and css....

I'm looking for a good tutorial on how to make a CSS drop-down navigation menu. I've been around the internets looking but I am getting easily confused.

I need a drop down menu that will fit in a fixed-width div (590px). If there's extra space, the menu items should be centered. I'd like to be able to have background-images that change as you hover over them, but that's not a necessity.

you can see the current nav bar it pretty boring. We're going to add a lot more sections to it, so I think drop-down is a must.

So... anyone know any good references?

I take it your using <TABLE>'s to create the drop menu's, if so just set the width in the table tag. and just use the DIV tag to center the menus.
