Default Laptop Buyers Guide - 8 Things To Consider

Buying a laptop nowadays is very much like purchasing a new vehicle, in a sense that it is a fairly big purchase and there are so many different brands, models and variations. It is therefore crucial that one shops around before letting go of the one's hard-earned money.

I have put together a list to help you on your quest to finding a new laptop, Here are 8 things to consider:

The Purpose

First thing to consider is what you will actually be using it for, as each specific laptop is designed to fulfill a need and is aimed at a specific user. For Instance, if you are a game enthusiast, size and weight are not a huge concern, you would look for a laptop with high space and speed capabilities - You would probably look at the Alienware brand/range who are known to specialize in this field. And so on.

The Size

If you're an on-the-go kind of person, choose a smaller laptop as they are normally lighter and more compact. Also the smaller screens take up less battery life. Any laptop user knows that the battery life is a crucial factor.

How Many Ports?

In most cases you will in fact be using your laptop in unison with other devices, so I would definitely recommend that you find a laptop that has enough ports to support at least a printer, mouse and flash drive. You could however use a USB hub if it doesn't have ports.

Does It Have A CD/DVD Reader?

Chances are you will need this if you if would like to watch dvd's, listen to cd's and so on. Normally comes standard with most models these days. If you would like to copy dvd's. You will need a DVD writer.

The Hard Drive

The speed of a hard drive is measured in rotations per minute (rpm). Look for a laptop which has at least 4200rpm or 5400rpm. 40 gigabytes is sufficient in terms of memory.

The Processor

You can choose between Intel and AMD. At the moment, Intel has the best processor for a laptop called the Core 2 Duo. The speed of processors is measured in Gigahertz. The bigger the number, the faster the processor is. There are also Dual-Core processors. It means they can process two things at the same time. As a result, the power of the processor is doubled.

The Memory

Your laptop should have at least 1 GB of memory. However, you can get a notebook with 512 MB and work with Windows XP. You should avoid a laptop with only 256 MB of memory

The Warranty

Each laptop computer should come with one year warranty from the manufacturer covering only defective equipment. You can also get an extended warranty covering any accidents you may have.

Well I hope these tips will help you out.

Here is a great site if your looking for reviews and best prices on laptops.

That really depends on what you classify as 'better'. Each brand and model is unique and boasts different features, technologies, specifications, glitches etc...

Overall, personally I would say that Toshiba and Sony are tops, although some people may not agree. It really depends on the needs of the user I think.
