Default my web host did this to me - would would you do here?

Ok, so here's the situation. We have this web host who we're paying so much per year for hosting. They have been ok so far.

Anyway, 6 weeks ago they take the website down because it was using an old version of Joomla. They didn't tell me they took it down. I found out last week and contacted them. They said they lost their notes as to exactly why they took the site down but said someone probably hacked it and thats why it was taken down.

Anyway, they want to blank my site and tell me to upload a new version of Joomla. I said that it would take ages to get the content right again and add all the extra modules etc.

Any advice?

That's unprofessional. They should have contacted you prior to deleting your content. If they had to remove it for security sake, they should have retained your folders and database for you to do whatever you wanted with them.

If they do not have a backup of your files, I would find a new host immediately.

I agree, they should have notified you that they were going to remove your site, they didn't handle it in the most professional manner.

However, in their defense, your lack of updating your site leaves them vulnerable to security issues that could affect other accounts on that server, so they were looking out for everyone. Your insecure, outdated site could have allowed the compromise of hundreds of sites on their server.

My advice to you is to suck it up, and rebuild your site on a newer version of Joomla. It's your responsibility to maintain back-ups of your site and if you don't have any to use, then that's nobody's fault but your own.
