Where can I get free domain names?

Specifically a .ca or a .net domain name. Everywhere I go they claim to be free, then ask me for like $80 for one. And is Marapets hosting any good?

"Free domain names" is usually a gimmick to attract new clients. They are not exactly lying, but be careful. Usually if you sign a hosting contract at a given company they may "give" you a free domain. However, in reality they are not giving you anything, as they become owners of your domain, because they are the ones who paid for it and therefore have access to the web page / control panel where it is possible to change the DNS servers IP's. So, if you are not satisfied with your hosting service you most probably be unable to transfer your domain to another hosting service, because you don't control your own domain.

I know it is not quite what you are looking for, but if the emphisis is on FREE, check out dyndns.org. Last I was there you could set up your own address something like myaddress.{dyndns.org} but there was a ton of options. It allowed people especially with dynamic IP addresses to still maintain the correctly forwarding address. Simply by having one of many update services running on your computer. It constantly made sure that your IP address was maintained correctly in their DB. I hosted my own web and FTP server for years that way. No matter where I was I could always get to my computer and primarily I used the ftp server to move files around. Just a thought...

Nothing is free seriously,

You might be able to get a no cost domain for purchasing a hosting package for 2 years but its really not free come on now.

You wont be able to get a .net for free. I guarentee it. A co.uk is easy to get. Will just cover up what recently had.

There was a loophole in a buy.com promotion a couple months ago where you get a free domain name with every purchase...thing was you could cash out at $0 with an empty cart and you still got emailed the code for the free domain for a year.

I wish that was still going on!
