If you didn't hear already, 1&1 is giving away 5 free .info domain names.

No catch really, except you have to give credit card info. They charge you $6 and then refund it. you get it free for a year.

Ive purchased many domains in my time, i think .com is the only way to go.

Ummm, if its really trully free without some nasty suprises in the future, why do they need to debit your credit card in the first place?

I don't know why they would need the CC info either except for when the renewal comes up in a year and they would charge $6 for renewal?

Im sure they will change you alot more then just $6 because domains get more expencive and they are just trying to rip you off... I bet each domain at the end of they year comes out to like 15$...

They get your credit card info to verify that you are actually a person, then if you decide to host your domain with them they can charge your for it....

The service 1&1 provide, along with their horrible control panel doesn't really make it worthwhile, even if the names are free. It's a nice offers, and if you really need a free name, then I would definately go for it. However if you are planning on actually using the domain, I would pay $1.99 or something and pay for a .info domain somewhere like DomainSite.
