Hi,

Just a quick disclaimer, I work for DigiCert and happened to stumble across your posting. I thought I could do some good so I signed up on the forum today.

There are a couple of options to meet your needs. Generally speaking, you will need one certificate for each domain name. Certificates can be designed to meet the following scenarios:

-Standard - Secure a single specified domain name (example.com)
-EV - Secure & enable green bar for a single specified domain name (example.com)
-Wildcard - Secure unlimited subdomains of a specified domain name (*.example.com)
-UC - Secure multiple domains with a single certificate (example.com, test.com, etc.)

If you're looking for one certificate to secure all of your domain names, the UC certificate is your only option. Most Certificate Authorities charge a fee for each server you install the certificate on. DigiCert does not, but you should be aware that this could be a disadvantage if you go with someone else and don't have all of the domains on a single server.

One advantage to using multiple single certificates is if you need to revoke/disable one name, you don't have to affect all of your other domains. You'll need to be sure that the domains don't share the same IP address though.

That sounds a lot more complicated than it really is. Send me an email or give me a call if there’s anything else I can do to help!

Thanks,

Thumbs up Re: How many SSL Crtificates I Need???

If you have several web site hosted over different domains and you want to buy only one SSL certificate then UC (Unified Communication) SSL certificate is a good option. Because it will help you secure multiple domains without buying multiple SSL Certificates.
But I will suggest you to go for EV(Extended Validation) SSL Certificate because It provides the latest encryption scheme available in market and the latest one available. And also it is good to stay updated.

Unless you have a large ecommerce store then buying an EV certificate is not really necessary and probably just a waste of money IMO.

you will generally need 1 certificate per domain. unless you want to get the UC but that has both advantages and disadvantages.

Secure Sockets Layer, SSL, is the standard security technology for creating an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browser remain private and integral. SSL is an industry standard and is used by millions of websites in the protection of their online transactions with their customers. In order to be able to generate an SSL link, a web server requires an SSL Certificate.
When you choose to activate SSL on your webserver you will be prompted to complete a number of questions about the identity of your website (e.g. your website's URL) and your company (e.g. your company's name and location). Your webserver then creates two cryptographic keys - a Private Key and a Public Key. Your Private Key is so called for a reason - it must remain private and secure. The Public Key does not need to be secret and is placed into a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) - a data file also containing your details. You should then submit the CSR during the SSL Certificate application process Comodo, the Instant SSL Certification Authority, who will validate your details and issue an SSL Certificate containing your details and allowing you to use SSL.
Your webserver will match your issued SSL Certificate to your Private Key. Your webserver will then be able to establish an encrypted link between the website and your customer's web browser.

SSL Certificates stands for Secure Socket Layer certificates.
SSL Certificates are absolutely essential for any website collecting sensitive information online.
SSL is a Secure Socket Layer protocol which is responsible for creating secure communication between client and server.
This is done by both server and client authentication and the consultation of an encryption algorithm and cryptographic keys.
This helps show that your site is secure and is trusted so that clients are dare to make secure transactions through your site.
If you will be accepted credit card payments online, then a Comodo SSL Certificate is right for you.
SSL certificates can only be installed on your main domain on the account and cannot be for a
subdomain, addon domain or parked domain.
