Default The Value of Domains

Right, so I've been around the internet for a while now. One of the things I've noticed is that domain names have values. For instance, a 3 letter domain could go for hundreds, while a 10 letter domain won't go for much. Why is it that domain names with fewer letters sell for so much more?

3-letter domain names can be snatched up and someone could literally invent a company name to match the domain name. Ie; HKP.com (three letter I just randomly hit - no kidding) could be snatched up, then you can make something up, like... Hong Kong Properties. You can see from that how nice it would be to own that domain, as the possibilities could be endless. I would kill to get my hands on a 3-letter domain.

I got a couple of 3 character domains. As you know 3letter domains are more expensive then 3 characters. I got 0GO.net, which i'm quite glad with. It's more of a future investment, as soon the 3 character domains.net will also be worth more and more! let's hope it get's there soon cause I can use the money

That makes sense, and I can see why they're so sought out after. I think I may try to buy one in the near future.

Nice, klaas. Sounds like quite an investment.

I think any 3 letter domain name would be valued based on these few factors:
- Marketability
- Clarity
- Memorability
- Popularity
- Extension
- Length
- Words
- Hyphens
- Numerals
- Substitutions
- Abbreviations

So car.net would be worth more then cra.net...

its not the size that matters its what you do with it that counts!

Keyword specific domains that would be easier to get a high ranking in a market usully sell for big $$$ now. i.e. www.computer.com

In the old days back in the 90s as all domain names were up for grabs peopel used to buy the ones they knew would be wanted by big companies like coca-cola.com and sell it to the company when they went online but there's laws against that now (that domain name was an example I don't know its history)

I think single words or short phrases of 1-3 rememberable words should be worth more. Like this site is easier to find as webmasterforums.com rather then wmf.com

domain names become much more valuable after someone has spent time developing the website and has gotten it a good page rank and listed in the search egines and has built up incoming links.

People will then want to buy it, but other people try to steal it by waiting for the time an update comes around for WHOIS and then registering the name for themselves before your host can re-register it.

Isn't that just stealing!!!
