Default How To Speed Up & Optimize Your Computer 101

Speeding Up Your System Boot:

*Backup before attempting any tip provided here no one is responsible but you!*
< For Windows XP User's Only >

1.Disabling the system boot screen:

First you will need to create a new boot.ini file (its not a scary as it sounds)

Open Notepad and type the follow in the same exact order.

[boot loader]
timeout=0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional"/fastdetect/noguiboot

If upgraded from Windows 2000 or any other NT based O/S your root directory is not Windows then u will have to make a change to this code. To correct it to the correct directory the code should look something like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microso ft Windows XP Professional"/fastdetect/noguiboot

Click save as Type Boot.ini change save type to All Files
Then Change the save directory to your drive root which is usually c:
hit save and your done.

Stay tuned for more tips to come...!

Thanks for the tip and please keep them coming.
I used to mess with the ini files back in the 1990's. Been a long while.

Appreciate it.

I mved some shortcuts off the desktop to a folder. Not sure how much that helps.

I also use Google desktop search for my pc. I LOVE IT..but I think the indexing slows down the pc.

Won't let me post the url yet..

Camelman's Tip #1:
Level: Advanced

Try increasing the size of your paging file. Be sure to close all programs before going through these steps.

Steps:
1) Right-click "My Computer" and go to Properties.
2) Go to Advanced and click "Settings" under the Performance section.
3) Go to the Advanced Tab.
4) Click "Change" at the bottom.
5) Highlight the drive you'd like your page file to be on (Usually the C: drive)
6) Select custom size.
7) In the "Initial size" field type 1000.
8) In the "Maximum size" field type 1000.
9) Click Set.
10) Click OK until it it tell you to restart.
11) RESTART

More to come....

No offense there Jaka... but I disagree.

If you want a performance BOOST? DO NOT install Vista. The BETA is still a humongous resource hog. It MAY get better once the final is out, but I doubt it.

I don't recommend running Vista unless you do a clean install on a machine with a MINIMUM of a 3 GHz processor with AT LEAST 1 GB of RAM.

That's just my opinion, but I have close to those specs (2.8 GHz Intel, 1GB of RAM and with a clean install) and it ran like a pig.

Check out the following thread *I* started:
Windows Vista

Laterz...

Some random tips:
1)Defragment hard drive at least once a month (duh)
2)Clean up system startup processes by going to Run > msconfig and then decide which programs you really need on startup.
3)Keep your desktop clean and your My Documents folder organized. Clean up the files that you no longer need or burn them onto a disc and clear them off your hard drive
4)Add more RAM to your computer or change the RAM timings (more technical)
5)Add new components to your computer (ie if you have an onboard video chip, get an actual video card, or for onboard sound, buy a sound card)
6)Get a new computer

If you're in windows:

Right Click on "My Computer".

Select "Properties".

Select the "Advanced" tab at the top of the properties dialog.

Click the "Settings" button in the "Performance" section of the advanced properties page.

The Performance Options dialog opens to the "Visual Effects" pane/tab.

Select "Adjust for best performance" from the radio buttons.

Click the OK button to exit each dialog, and you are done.

Changing this one setting has shocked some people with the performance gains on older systems. There are other places to turn off most of this eye-candy, but this gets most of it all at once.

Most people don't even miss any of it. Your mileage may vary.
