Default Size Matters

My PC at the moment is stuck with 80GB and it currently has hard drive problems, as it is full. I need an external hard drive but what is the best size for a constant downloader?

For a "constant downloader"..... how much money do you want to spend?....

since it sounds as though you just need the drive for storage --as opposed to producing video's, running a network server, whatever.... Maybe RPM's are less important than size..... Bigger slower may be cheaper than faster smaller? I dunno.... until it comes to burning images.

I have a couple of 6 month old external "LaCie 250gigs" on my desk..... they run 24/7.... The Porshe case looks very sleek, they have a quite 7200rpm drive in them, USB and firewire connectivity... and they cost about US.$130.00.... So far.... no problems....

I also have a 120gig 7200rpm Western Digital external... It's a few years old now... but never a problem

Drives are so cheap right now..... getting a drive with 80 less gigs, and saving $30-40.00 doesn't make sense to me

externals? good price! I bought mine maybe 4 months ago.... man, hardware is cheap.....

Also, I bought from a big box close to my house.... I'm willing to pay a little more to just be able to drive it back and get a new one if it fails, instead of dealing with the mail.

Yes, the close proximity and being able to return cheap is smart. I've had bad items replaced free via mail, but never know about service.

I totally understand looking for the cheapest deal.... but to me there's a lot of factors besides price..... particularly if it's something you actually NEED....

A few years ago, a camera purchased at Best Buy failed when I was using it on a job, and Best Buy took it back, and upgraded me on the spot --the original camera was about three months old when it failed.... The replacement is GREAT... it was a significant upgrade... been using it for close to three years --I love it.

No hassle... which was great because the camera failed on a day I needed to shoot photo's for work, and I was over 100 miles from the Best Buy I originally purchased from when it broke..... I stilll had to drive, but finding a store 25 miles from where I was saved the day from being a complete loss (with a 200 mile round trip involved, that would have to be done TWICE)

I bet I could have saved $20 on the original camera if I had really shopped around and bought on the web, but with the failure and then having to ship it somewhere --time lost, and a second 200 mile trip-- it would have cost me $$$$ in my pocket......

So was it worth the extra $20 I spent?... on that day, to me, it definitely was....

YMMV....

Go for Lacie. They are cheap, beautifull and reliable. USB and/or Firewire.
Their Brick Desktop goes grom 160Gb-99$ until 500Gb-269$.
Do a search on google and look at those beauties...

Well.... I didn't want to get into esthetics.... but they *are* fricken sleek looking, eh?... Not at all like those Maxtor cases.... If you are into having nice looking hardware on your desk.... these are very sweet looking drives.... small foot print, minimalist case, reliable drive with both USB and Firewire....cool.... and they're noticibly quieter than my Western Digital....

If you don't particularly care what it looks like, the Maxtor (or whatever) will definitely give you more gigs for your money....
