For free spyware cleaning I reccomend adaware and spydoctor, both are really good and 100% free. I hate it when some software just tells you how much spyware you have and that you need to buy the aoftware before it will remove it. And they promote it as "free"!

For anti-virus, check out avast! (avast.com)

Can be licenced for free for home users, and isn't nearly as bloated as Norton or others. Total install is around 30MB or so. Very good for older systems or systems that are short on RAM.

Is very light, fast, and includes support for Outlook, P2P and IM scanning.

Definitely recommended. I have been using it for about a year with good results.

I would say, hands down. Spybot and Adware are the best. Both free, both upgradable.

Install one at a time, upgrade them with the latest patches which are free. Then run one after the other. Your system will be spyware clean

security problems by using them simultaneously.

1. XoftSpy-SE (the biggest base of detected spyware programs) +

2. Netcom Internet Security (complete protection from viruses including firewall) +

3. SpyBot Search and Destroy (the only freeware anti-spyware program!)

These programs are from the the different manufacturers and they do have different threats definitions bases but in a complex they cover 99.8%! of all known threats. These numbers are taken from the direct comparison of the 18 popular antivirus programs so it can be trusted.
