Default CPU Speed - Memory Problems with 400Mhz DDR Rams

I always end up with some problem or other with these memories. I know these are obselete now. Many people are using very high speed Rams. But I couldn't change without a processor change.

I am using 400Mhz, 256Mb DDR rams, that are not doing so good when memory usage is higher than 300Mb. It basically happens with internet usage.

When internet is used for hours, downloading many pages, the memory usage goes through the roof and reaches 700Mb. At this point my computer becomes so slow even though it is a 3Ghz cpu.

What do you people do about stabilizing the speed at higher memory usages?

May be you are right.. I should really upgrade. But it costs a lot to upgrade the motherboard and I may even end up not finding a compatible motherboard for the existing cpu. Then i will upgrade to a whole new set.

Meanwhile my cpu fan seems to be in danger. It got lot of dust which I am cleaning now once in a while. Somehow it makes a lot of annoying noise. I don't understand how the cpu is going.
