Im really confused is it true that formating is harmful to your hard disk?
What are your thoughts about this?

Hi,

The only way formatting a drive normally would be unhealthy would be by formatting it several times a week for a year or two, that might bad on the hd.
Formatting an older drive can be rough too.

With a fairly new healthy drive, the normal "only when necessary" formatting should not be harmful. Annually or semi-annual should be fine.

I have an old hp pavillion with ME installed. I basically use it for coding and surfing the net. I have formatted it maybe 2-3 times a year for the last 3 years and have not noticed any issues yet.

I dont see the harm in it. Ive formatted drives well over 4 times.. hrmmm. thinking about it, i believe i formatted my scsi drive over 50x in a year...

I used to to store data, and once it was all backed up, i would make a habbit of formatting... No issues there... *but i did want to smash my plextor burner a few times*

Maybe back in the day (10 years ago) it was concern, id be shocked if this is something you have to worry about these days.....
