build your own pc...
I'm considering building my own pc - buying and installing the parts - the whole thing.
What I'm looking for is people who have done this. Did you do it? Did you like it? did you save money? Can you get more memory, etc installed if you do it yourself?
Where can I find cheap parts (that work)? The body, ram, motherboard, etc.
And in general, would you recommend this.
Thank you!

Building a PC is quite simple really. They can only go into one place.
If you place the Ram chip into the PCI slot I would salute you.
There should be quite a lot guides or you can rip out you old one to take a look

Hi,
As ~augustine stated it's really not that hard. I have bought bare bones systems off ebay and some distributors on the net. This will get you the basic's to get started, most bare bones will include of course the tower, power supply, floppy, cd-rom and maybe a mix and match of some other hardware.
From that point you can add in your own graphics card, mother board, HD, processor, memory, O/S and other components/software/drivers you wish to beef up your system with.
Enjoy

Just somethings to take note.
1) Set the correct voltage! I blow up one before when I was not careful...
2) Make sure the RAM chips are fully inserted
3) Make sure the Mainboard is not directly directly in contact with the casing there should be somthing so that the metal does not come in contact. Sometimes it looks like a white plastic screw.

Hm, I haven't done it before but I am planning to. Some of my friend's built their own computer and they say it's a lot better and the price is extremely cheaper.

Re: build your own pc...
Building your own pc may bring some cost savings, but i think the benefit is being able to source what parts you want to use.
I’ve never owned a pre bundled machine, all have been built from scratch, even the very first machine i had; my uncle helped me.
You can essentially go to a small PC shop and have them walk you through picking what parts you want to use.
If you’re paying around $60 us to have someone build your machine and install windows it isn’t a bad price. You have someone qualified doing it. This will also help if you have hardware issues, like a bad video card, they wont blame you for installing it yourself.
As for custom building a laptop, ive seen more people getting into the mix and matching of parts, ive never been involved with that however.

At this point laptop parts are very manufacturer specfic, but that has been changing recently. Swapping in a new harddrive is a typical upgrade, but as far as 'building from scratch' it's not really feasible. You can't go to your mom and pop PC shop and assemble a laptop from various parts. I like to leave all that to the manufacturer's

Re: build your own pc...
I vote.
Build your own!!
If you are looking to save money, building your own is NOT the way to go, if you want something cheap, go buy a dell. It is nearly impossible to compete with them on price with the huge economies of scale that they get.
But, building you own is fun and has some great advantages, like getting to cusomize it anyway you like, and if something needs upgrading you already know how to do it.
I just finished pimping up my new PC. Haven't overclocked the chip yet, but I'm planning on it.
Specs:
NVIDIA GeForce 7800GTX
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 2211 MHz
MAXTOR DiamondMax 200GB SATA 7200RPM 16MB
ANTEC NEOPOWER 480W POWER SUPPLY ATX12V
OCZ EL Platinum REV.2 PC3200 1GB 2X512MB DDR
BenQ DW1625 Lightscribe Black DVD+-RW 16X4X16
Razer Plasma Diamondback 1600 DPI Mouse
SAITEK ECLIPSE KEYBOARD BLACK USB W/ BLUE LED
