inetd is also referred to as the 'super server' - it controls things like access to services like FTP, POP and IMAP. Usually, you enable (comment out) these services, then restart inetd so the changes take effect.

Best thing to do is read the manual for your specific Linux or Unix distro to see what the pitfalls are.
