Hi,
As ~augustine stated it's really not that hard. I have bought bare bones systems off ebay and some distributors on the net. This will get you the basic's to get started, most bare bones will include of course the tower, power supply, floppy, cd-rom and maybe a mix and match of some other hardware.
From that point you can add in your own graphics card, mother board, HD, processor, memory, O/S and other components/software/drivers you wish to beef up your system with.
