Does anyone here do a significant amount of advertising, as in with an advertising network, such as Adwords? (or the thousands of other ones available)

In general, how much money do you need to set aside for this sort of paid advertising to actually take an effect and drive the needed traffic to your website in order to make a prophet? In other words, is paying money to an ad network worth the time, money, and trouble, or should one take other means to get traffic?

Does anyone here use this sort of advertisement, and if so, how much do you spend per month, and would you recommend it?
