I do think that affiliate programs are the best bet to monetize. Certainly make more than serving ads in most cases.
Just a thought on choosing a program: I'd say that unless you have absolutely monster traffic and are likely to get heaps of sales, it's best to go for a program that gives you nice big commissions. Then you only have to get one or two to reach your payout threshold.
Also, the fact that the business running the program is willing to give you a big percentage is often (not always!) a good sign. It means that the product is a good seller, and they're making good money from it. So, if you keep at it, it shouldn't be too difficult to make a sale.
