They have a different way of doing things. Depends on what you want and the power of your rig. There are heavy distros like those based on KDE and Gnome. They are usually a beaut, with extensive graphics. There are also light distros like XFCE, for less powerful and older computers, but they still look and function good.
Me, I prefer light weight distros, even for P4s, since I don't need eye-candy.
