I've always been a fan of Redhat, Fedora, and Centos. Fedora is a spin-off of Redhat, and Centos is a spin off of Redhat Enterprise Linux.
They all share a lot of the same commands / utilities / config files.
If you've never even used linux before, download knoppix. You burn it to a disc, and boot right off the CD. This gives you a fully (almost) functional linux install. Well, it's not an install. Since it's running off the cd, Windows on your hard drive is left untouched. When your tired of it and want to go back, reboot and take the cd out.
