What you need to remember is that google is also a registrar and quite oftem (i think standard practice) zero rates the domain when it has changed ownership to prevent this very thing happening. I would also check the whois data and make sure that the expired domain was not used for spamming or has been blacklisted. If this is the case you may have to file a reinclusion request at google.
