I've got Knoppix as a Debian based System installed (with Hardware Detection: recommend for beginners) and i havent got any problems with it at all. Though updating sucks if you got a small internet connection (updating every weekend and it downloads mostly over 100 MB of updates every weekend). And i wasnt able to compile the vanilla kernel for my processor, but i guess i am doing something wrong with it. Except that it works well. I havent got freezing at all like in windows and it boots much faster ^^. If you use the Debian installaion without Knoppix you have to configure Debian for your hardware by yourself while it detects everything automatically if you install the debian like system with knoppix.
